How Much Does Motocross Gear Cost? - Risk Racing

I've been riding dirt bikes since I was a little kid and I've owned a motocross gear and accessory company since 2005. I can tell you that over the years I have purchased my fair share of motocross gear and can give you some seasoned advice. To give you an idea of what motocross gear costs I put together this table:

MX SAFETY & RIDING GEAR COST RANGE
Dirt Bike Helmet $130 - $650+
MX Goggles $20 - $220
MX Jersey $20 - $110
MX Pants $50 - $350
MX Gloves and Palm Protectors $15 - $60
MX Boots $100 - $650+
Knee Braces $200 - $840
Elbow and Wrist Guards $20 - $200
Body Armor $45 - $290
Neck Brace $45 - $370
TOTAL COST OF MX GEAR $645 - $3,740+

The total cost of gear is a very large range starting at a very budget-friendly $645 and going all the way up to $3,740 depending on your needs and available budget. If you have a very limited budget try to invest most of your money into protecting your head and face.

Now that you know the range of moto gear cost, let me show you some of the specifics about each type of gear so you can decide what you want to spend. Don’t want a range of what it could cost? Stick around till the end for our favorite’s gear list coming in at $2,374.

The Different Types of Motocross Gear & Accessories

Motocross safety gear protects you when crashing, and yes, you are going to crash. Features to look for in your gear is that it enhances your aerodynamics, and keeps you cooled down and protected.

What Riding  / Safety Gear do I Need?

  • Helmet and goggles
  • Boots
  • Jerseys
  • Pants
  • Gloves and palm protectors
  • Neck brace
  • Body armor
  • Knee and elbow braces

What Motocross Accessories do I need?

  • Dirt bike stand
  • Utility jug
  • A transport tie-down system
  • Goggle Lens, Tear-Off or Roll-Off system
  • Quality aftermarket handlebar grips
  • A motocross practice gate

Let’s dive into the costs associated with each piece of safety gear and its benefits.

How much do motocross helmets cost?

The majority of Motocross Racers are going to be using an off-road dirt bike helmet which is a full-face helmet with a built-in chinstrap and visor. They are the best option because they are very lightweight and you can get into a good one for under $350.

The helmet isn’t an area where going the cheap route is beneficial. Over the years, scientific studies have shown us the importance of protecting our noggin, and buying a cheap helmet is not a smart way to handle that. Top of the line motocross helmets are not only the top in our industry, but the same companies work with other sports, such as the NFL, to create the safest solutions possible for your head.

Moto helmets are designed to be used with a partnering set of goggles.

Just having a clear visor or face shield in isn’t going to keep mud and dirt from getting in your eyes while racing motocross. MX Goggles are designed to create a seal around your face to do just that.

So how much are MX goggles?

A decent pair of motocross goggles can be purchased for about $40 to $60. Some features to look for are multiple lens options, tear off lens packs, lens cleaners, and different lens options like mirrored, tinted, or clear.

Risk Racing sells kits to save you money, including the JAC MX Tear-Off Goggle.

Goggle Roll-off Cost?

If you are racing Motocross then you're going to have roost (rocks, dirt, and mud that get thrown up from riders in front of you) thrown in your face at some point so you may want to also look into an auto roll-off system to clear your vision hands-free

If you have the money we highly recommend these, especially when you are starting out so that you can focus more on the track then reaching up and ripping lenses off your face.

How Much Are Motocross Boots?

Motocross boots are extremely important as they protect those things you walk on every day. They protect your feet, ankles, and lower legs from things like impacts, twisting and turning, and other safety hazards like the extreme heat from your bike.

Ideally, you are going to want to have a budget in the $300 range for a good set of boots. Like a helmet, I strongly advise going the cheap route when it comes to boots. Cheaper sets do not hold up as well when it comes to supporting your ankles and feet when they get stretched, twisted or bent, and you do not want to have ankle issues for the rest of your life.

How much do Motocross Gloves cost?

A high-quality set of motocross gloves will provide optimal grip, help reduce blisters, and keep you from sweating all over the place. They’re also good for preventing scrapes not if, but when, you fall off your bike. Risk Racing sells gloves for about $24.99, including the stylish VENTilate Salute Motocross Gloves.

Blisters on your hands come with the territory but you can do a lot to build up calluses and prevent too many of them just by picking out the right set of gloves and palm protector inserts.

How much are Palm Protectors?

Palm Protectors are really a necessary investment when you are riding in motocross, you’ll want to use them in conjunction with your gloves. Think of them as an extra layer of skin because when your hands are taking on the fiction of those handlebars you’ll want as much protection as possible. They usually cost less than $10.

What’s the Price of a Good Pair of Moto Pants?

The best moto pants are designed for comfort, ventilation, and protection.

This is a must-have to keep you protected for falls, crashes, collisions, or you accidentally rub up on your exhaust. Risk Racing has some pretty stylish and durable motocross pants for $99.99, making them worth the investment.

What Should you Spend on a Motocross Jersey?

You can get MX Jerseys quite a bit cheaper than the pants. In fact, Risk Racing racing sells matching jerseys for $32.99, which makes them easily affordable.

You can stand out in bold brand design and are protected for many hours in dirt racing mud ripping trail rides. A good motocross jersey should fully cover your arms with long sleeves and still be breathable.

How much for an MX Neck Brace?

This piece of safety equipment will help you keep from breaking your neck or collar bones and help prevent hyperextending your neck forwards or backward.

Some riders aren't huge fans of them because they can restrict overall movement and sightlines. To get your hands on a good neck brace you're going to be spending around $150.

How Much is Body Armor?

Body armor is that protective barrier that goes under your jersey to give your torso some added protection against roost. Body armor can range anywhere from $45 all the way up to $290 because of the wide array of options.

You can go for just a very small chest protector all the way up to a full-body armor suit that protects you from your neck all the way down to your groin including your arms.

Knee Braces

Knee braces aren't just for the old guy out there on the track. These are very important pieces of safety equipment that are going to keep your knee from twisting the wrong way or hyperextending. Consider you are maneuvering a 200+ lb machine between your legs that can do 80 mph!

These braces are not to be confused with a knee guard which is essentially more like a knee pad. Typically knee braces are going to run $300 and up for a decent pair and truly are worth the investment.

As you can see, motocross safety gear really doesn’t have to be super expensive. You can get a top-tier setup from Risk Racing, be stylin’, protected, and have some of the most cutting edge technology at your fingertips without totally blowing the budget.

Prices for Misc. Motocross Items

If you’ve dove deep into the various items offered in the motocross community, then you know that it doesn’t stop with just the necessary gear. Other items, including canopy tents, lights, and transportation equipment, are also worth looking into and can be something to save for.

Below, you’ll find a list of the most common miscellaneous motocross gear along with their average prices.

  • A good set of handlebar grips typically costs between $20 to $30. The Fusion Grips from Risk Racing are currently tagged at $19.99, so they’re on the lower end of the spectrum.

  • If you want to add an additional layer of support, then consider getting theMud Grips on top of your Fusion Grips. They’re only $8, making them one of the cheapest comfort and mud safety measures around.
  • Grip donuts are also worth trying out as they’re only $3 and can greatly reduce the number of blisters you get on the sides of your finger and thumb rubbing up against the grip.

  • You should have a Mud Axe in your to-go kit if you want to keep your bike clean and mud-free. They’re made to scrape, pick, and scoop mud from your dirt bike, preventing overheating and poor performance and come in at $19.99.
  • For those of you DIYers who want to work on your bike yourself, consider getting a good work light. Depending on if it’s to light up your moto tent trackside or your garage back home, you can expect to spend between $39.99 to $129.99 or more.Check out these handy mobile lights to help you see when you’re accessing your dirt bike on your big race weekend.

  • Preventative fork seal maintenance is an important investment. A leak can ruin the day, sending you home until you get it repaired. However, a good fork seal solution runs about $24.99 and can save you a trip to the parts shop later. It’s worth getting theSealdoctor to keep your bike up and racing all weekend long.

  • If you’re driving your bike to and from different locations, then you should highly consider getting an MX transport system to hold your dirt bike in place with ease. Check out theLock-N-Load Moto Pro transport system as it can truly make your life easier transporting your bike back and forth to the track and it’s in the $280 range.
  • Moto socks are something you're going to want to have as a protective barrier between your knee brace and your leg. They essentially look like giant compression socks that go from your toe all the way up to your groin and prices are in the $30 range.
  • Like most hobbies that require special clothing and accessories, these bulky items can really start to add up and require a gear bag. This just makes it easier to travel with the gear and store it as well and you can expect to find one in the $60 - $200 range.

How Much Is a Holeshot Training Gate?

If you’re interested in improving your start times, then you’ll need a holeshot training gate. TheHoleshot Race Gate comes with a remote that can connect via a provided cable and also comes with a handlebar mountable wireless remote. This device will help you practice your launches just as if you were at the motocross track.

Here’s a list of pros of the Holeshot Race Gate:

  • You can pair two or more gates together with one remote. This feature allows you to use it with quads or practice with several friends.
  • Connect the provided cable for an instant start. Right when the gate drop is clicked, it’ll go down. Your partner will be in charge of deciding the perfect timing. If you want to randomize the start time for better focus, connect the remote wirelessly, and set it. It’ll take between one to five seconds to drop.
  • You can purchase the Holeshot Race Gate with four payments rather than buying it all at once. We’ve all had to set budgets, which is why Risk Racing offers the ability to limit the amount you spend each month. Get the best gear without spending the pro-quality prices.
  • The Holeshot Race Gate costs $299.99, which is ideal for those who want to upgrade their performance. It comes with everything you need to place higher and practice your launch times wherever you go. Compared to similar holeshot devices, it’s one of the most affordable on the market.

Conclusion

Some motocross gear is essential, while other equipment might not be as necessary. As stated byMoney Under 30, it’s better to spend money on safety gear than hospital bills. What you’ll need depends on your location, conditions, and expectations.
